SATAlevyt (SATA drives) refer to disk drives that use the Serial ATA interface. The term covers both traditional hard disk drives and solid‑state drives designed to connect through SATA interfaces. SATA overtook the older parallel ATA (PATA) standard in the early 2000s and became the standard internal storage interface for many desktops and laptops.

SATA provides point‑to‑point connections with separate power and data lines. The data connector is a 7‑pin cable, while the power connector is a 15‑pin connector on the drive. The interface has evolved through generations: SATA I (1.5 Gbit/s), SATA II (3.0 Gbit/s), and SATA III (6.0 Gbit/s). Real‑world throughput depends on the drive’s mechanics or flash performance, encoding overhead, and controller efficiency. HDDs are typically limited by mechanical factors, while SSDs can approach the high end of the interface but may be constrained by other system components.

Key features associated with SATA drives include hot swapping and Native Command Queuing (NCQ), which can improve performance for multi‑request workloads on HDDs. SATA SSDs frequently support TRIM and AHCI, the interface and driver framework that enable features such as efficient garbage collection and better command handling. SATA drives are generally backwards compatible within the SATA family, and motherboards and enclosures typically accept SATA I/II/III devices with appropriate cables.

Variants and evolution include efforts like SATA Express, which integrated PCIe signaling to enable higher speeds, though the vast majority of high‑performance consumer storage has moved to NVMe over PCIe. SATA remains widely used for cost‑effective storage, archival roles, and in systems without PCIe‑based SSDs.
