Ruokavaroja (literally food reserves) refers to the stock of food that is stored intentionally for future use, often to cover disruptions to normal food supply, emergencies, or periods of limited access to shopping. These reserves can be kept at the household level, by workplaces or schools, or managed by public authorities as part of preparedness plans. Household reserves typically include canned goods, dried grains and legumes, pasta or rice, powdered milk, cooking oil, sugar, salt, and other non-perishable items. Larger organizations or municipalities may maintain stockpiles that include similar staples, ready-to-eat meals, and bulk supplies. Effective management emphasizes regular rotation, labeling of expiry dates, and proper storage practices to minimize waste and maintain safety.

Storage guidelines emphasize conditions that extend shelf life and preserve quality. A cool, dry, dark storage area is preferred, with containers kept sealed and protected from pests. First In, First Out (FIFO) rotation helps ensure items are used before they expire.
