Out

It can describe something visible or present elsewhere, something no longer active or available, or a declaration of identity in certain social contexts.

In everyday language, out can signify departure or exclusion, as in going out, being out of reach, or staying out of a conversation. It also appears in phrases like out of print, meaning a book or work is no longer produced.

In sports, an out is a play that results in a batter or runner being ruled out, ending a team's turn at bat or a segment of the game. Baseball and softball typically count three outs per half-inning. In cricket, a batsman is described as “out” when dismissed, with “not out” indicating the batsman remains not dismissed.

In culture and media, Out is a title used for various works, including the 2020 Pixar short film Out, which centers on a character’s coming out to their family. The term also appears in other films, television episodes, music, and literature as a title or heading.

In LGBTQ+ contexts, “to come out” means publicly revealing one’s sexual orientation or gender identity, while “outing” refers to disclosing this information without consent. The phrases “out and proud” express visibility and acceptance.
