A batsman is a cricketer who specializes in batting, facing bowlers and trying to score runs for their team. In most formats, two batsmen are on the field at any time: the striker, who faces the next ball, and the non-striker, who supports and runs between wickets. The primary objective is to accumulate runs while protecting the wickets, and to build partnerships with the other batsman and the team.

Batsmen score mainly by running between the wickets and by hitting the ball to the boundary. Each completed run adds to the team's total, and boundaries yield four or six runs. When running, the batsmen change ends, potentially altering who faces the next ball. Boundaries typically do not require running, and the striker usually retains strike for the next ball since four and six are even.

Equipment and technique: A batsman uses a cricket bat, protected by gloves, pads, and a helmet. The typical stance is side-on, with feet positioned to cover angles and maintain balance. Batsmen may be right-handed or left-handed, and grips and footwork vary with style and conditions. Technique emphasizes shot selection, footwork, and the ability to adapt to pace, swing, and spin.

Crease and dismissal: Batsmen stand within the crease to guard their wicket. They can be dismissed in several ways, including being bowled, caught, leg before wicket (lbw), run out, stumped, or hit wicket. Retiring hurt ends the current innings for that batsman, though he may return later in the innings if able.

The term batsman is widely used in cricket literature, though some contexts prefer the gender-neutral batter. The role remains central to the sport, shaping strategy and player development.
