Runesmithing is the craft of creating runic inscriptions on objects, combining metalworking, carving, and symbolic or magical meaning. In historical contexts, runes refer to the runic alphabets used by Germanic peoples, while in modern fantasy and popular culture the term often denotes the practice of imbuing artifacts with enchantment or protective properties through runic inscriptions.

Runes were believed to carry power in magic, divination, or protection, and skilled artisans who engraved or inlaid runes were associated with setting these powers into objects.
