Rouhani

Hassan Rouhani is an Iranian politician who served as the seventh president of Iran from August 2013 to August 2021. He was also a prominent figure in the country's security and nuclear policy circles for decades. Born in 1948, Rouhani's political career began during the Iranian Revolution.

Before becoming president, Rouhani held numerous high-profile positions, including Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council for 16 years, chief negotiator for Iran's nuclear program, and Speaker of the Parliament. He is often described as a moderate or reformist politician, advocating for a more open society and a more constructive relationship with the international community.

His presidency was marked by significant events, including the negotiation and implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), commonly known as the Iran nuclear deal, in 2015. This deal aimed to curb Iran's nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief. Rouhani also oversaw efforts to improve Iran's economy and address social issues.

Despite facing internal political pressures and international challenges, including the U.S. withdrawal from the JCPOA and the reimposition of sanctions, Rouhani completed two terms in office. His legacy is often debated, with supporters highlighting his efforts at diplomatic engagement and economic reform, while critics point to persistent economic difficulties and unresolved political tensions. He is a member of the Assembly of Experts, a deliberative body of clerics responsible for electing and supervising the Supreme Leader.
