A negotiator is a person who conducts negotiations between two or more parties to reach a mutually acceptable agreement. They work across many sectors, including business, government, law, labor relations, international diplomacy, and mediation. The primary function is to bridge interests, define problems, and craft terms that satisfy parties while preserving relationships where possible.

Core activities include preparation, which involves gathering information, identifying objectives and BATNA (best alternative to a negotiated agreement); opening statements; bargaining and concessions; and closing with implementation plans. Negotiators assess leverage, possible trade-offs, and risk, and use strategies such as anchoring, framing, probing, and value creation to move discussions forward.

Types of negotiators vary by context. Corporate negotiators handle commercial deals and contracts; governmental or diplomatic negotiators work on treaties and settlements; labor negotiators represent employers or unions in collective bargaining; mediators facilitate agreements between parties; and law enforcement or crisis negotiators manage high-stakes or hostage situations under established protocols.

Skills and training are central to effectiveness. Successful negotiators combine clear communication, active listening, problem-solving, analytical thinking, emotional intelligence, and ethical judgment. Cultural sensitivity and risk assessment are also important. Training may include formal education, targeted negotiation courses, simulations, and professional certifications; professional bodies may offer guidance and standards.

Outcomes and considerations include the potential for durable agreements and improved relationships, as well as the risk of stalemate or poor terms. Ethical considerations emphasize confidentiality, informed consent, transparency within legal bounds, and respect for relevant laws and norms.
