Robotitöötlus, often translated as robotic process automation (RPA), refers to the use of software robots, or "bots," to automate repetitive, rule-based tasks that were previously performed by humans. These bots mimic human interactions with digital systems, navigating applications, entering data, extracting information, and performing other actions as if they were a human user. RPA is not about physical robots but rather about software that operates on a computer.

The primary goal of robotitöötlus is to increase efficiency, reduce errors, and free up human employees to focus on more complex and strategic work. It is particularly well-suited for tasks that are high-volume, prone to human error, or involve manipulating structured data. Common applications include data entry, form processing, report generation, and customer service support.

RPA solutions typically involve a platform where users can design, deploy, and manage these software bots. The development process often involves a "record and playback" mechanism or a visual workflow designer to map out the steps a bot should take. Once programmed, the bots can operate independently or in conjunction with human workers.

While RPA offers significant benefits, it is important to note its limitations. It is best for tasks with clear, defined rules and does not possess true artificial intelligence or the ability to handle exceptions or make complex judgments. Therefore, it is often implemented as part of a broader digital transformation strategy, sometimes combined with other technologies like artificial intelligence and machine learning to create more sophisticated automated solutions.
