Riskinhallinta is a broad concept encompassing the identification, assessment, and prioritization of risks followed by the coordinated application of resources to minimize, monitor, and control the probability or impact of unfortunate events. It is a systematic process designed to help organizations and individuals make informed decisions by understanding potential threats and opportunities. The ultimate goal of risk management is to protect and enhance organizational values and objectives.

The process typically begins with risk identification, where potential hazards or sources of uncertainty are systematically uncovered. This can involve brainstorming, checklists, expert opinions, or analyzing historical data. Once identified, risks are assessed to understand their likelihood of occurring and the potential severity of their impact. This assessment often uses qualitative or quantitative methods to rank risks.

Following assessment, risks are prioritized based on their significance. This allows resources to be focused on the most critical risks. Subsequently, appropriate risk treatment strategies are developed and implemented.
