Rishabhanathas

Rishabhanath, also known as Adinath or simply as the First Tirthankara, holds a central position in Jainism. He is believed to be the first human to achieve omniscience and reveal the path to liberation. Jain tradition considers him a historical figure who lived and propagated the faith in antiquity. His life story is recounted in various Jain scriptures, notably the Kalpasutra and the Adi Purana.

According to Jain beliefs, Rishabhanath was born a prince in the city of Ayodhya. He renounced his worldly possessions and embraced asceticism, embarking on a path of rigorous penance. After a period of intense spiritual practice, he attained Kevala Jnana, the highest form of knowledge. Following his enlightenment, he began to preach the Jain dharma, teaching principles of non-violence (ahimsa), truthfulness (satya), non-stealing (asteya), celibacy (brahmacharya), and non-possession (aparigraha).

Rishabhanath is depicted in Jain art and iconography with several distinguishing features, including a bull emblem. He is often shown in a meditative posture, seated or standing. His teachings laid the foundation for the subsequent Tirthankaras, who are seen as revivers and promulgators of the same eternal dharma. His life serves as an inspiration for Jains, emphasizing the potential for spiritual awakening and liberation inherent in all beings.
