Geography and ecology

Rinnemetsien typically occur on ridges, knolls, and other exposed high ground where drainage is good and wind exposure is greater than in valley or lowland forests. Soils are often drier and shallower, which affects species composition and structure. Common tree species include drought-tolerant conifers such as Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) and, in some regions, Norway spruce (Picea abies).
