Riiginan

Riiginan is a town and municipality in the fictional nation of Valora, located on the northeastern coast along Riigi Bay. It is the administrative center of Riiginan County and, as of 2022, has a population of about 7,900. The municipality covers an area of 64 square kilometers. The name Riiginan is of local origin and is commonly understood to mean “seat of governance” in the regional language.

Geography and climate: The town sits on a natural harbor with a mix of rocky shoreline and sandy beaches. Inland terrain is rolling with patches of pine forest. The climate is temperate maritime, with mild summers and cool winters and relatively high rainfall.

History: Riiginan originated as a medieval fishing village and developed into a commercial port through the medieval and early modern periods. It gained municipal status in the 19th century and expanded its economic base in the 20th, including light manufacturing and maritime services. The town sustained infrastructure rebuilding after regional conflicts in the late 20th century.

Economy: The local economy centers on fishing, boatbuilding and repair, logistics at the harbor, and small-scale manufacturing. Tourism is a growing sector, focused on the historic center and coastal scenery.

Governance: Riiginan operates under a mayor-council system. The 15-member Municipal Council oversees local services, planning, and education in cooperation with national authorities.

Culture and landmarks: Notable sites include the Old Town Hall, Riigi Harbor, and St. Mary’s Church. Annual events include Riiginan Days and a summer market at the harbor.
