Reumaatilised refers to conditions that affect the joints, muscles, and connective tissues. These conditions are often characterized by pain, stiffness, and swelling. While the term "rheumatism" was historically used more broadly to encompass a range of musculoskeletal complaints, in modern medicine, it is typically associated with inflammatory and degenerative diseases.

The causes of rheumatic diseases are diverse and can include autoimmune responses where the body's immune system mistakenly attacks its own tissues, genetic predispositions, infections, and age-related wear and tear. Some common examples include rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, lupus, gout, and fibromyalgia. Diagnosis of rheumatic conditions often involves a combination of medical history, physical examination, blood tests to detect inflammation markers or specific antibodies, and imaging techniques such as X-rays, ultrasounds, or MRIs. Treatment strategies aim to manage pain, reduce inflammation, preserve joint function, and improve quality of life. This can include medications like nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs), and biologics, as well as physical therapy, occupational therapy, and lifestyle modifications. Early diagnosis and appropriate management are crucial for preventing long-term damage and disability.
