Relocks

Relocks refer to devices or actions that re-engage a lock after it has been unlocked, most commonly encountered in security hardware such as safes, vault doors, and high-security locks. In this context, a relocker is a secondary mechanism designed to automatically engage if the primary locking system is defeated or tampered with, providing a second line of defense against forced entry.

Relocks can be classified as passive or active. Passive relockers activate automatically as a result of certain tamper or mechanical events, such as misalignment of locking bolts or unauthorized movement of components after the door has been closed. Active relockers require a reset by authorized users or a specific sequence to return the lock to a secure state after an intrusion attempt or legitimate use.

Common applications include bank vaults, commercial safes, and high-security doors, where the aim is to prevent a single point of entry from compromising the overall security system. In many electronic or combination locks, relocking features are integrated with alarm systems or time-delay mechanisms to deter or slow down potential intruders.

Maintenance and testing are important for relocks to function reliably. Regular inspection of relocker arms, springs, and reset mechanisms helps ensure the device remains ready to engage if needed. Relockers are one component of a layered security design and work alongside main locking bolts, alarms, surveillance, and physical protections to enhance overall resilience.
