Recementation

Recementation is the process by which a previously bonded or cemented material is reattached or by which mineral cement is dissolved and reprecipitated within a porous medium. The term is used in several fields, most commonly in geology and dentistry, and describes either a physical procedure or a natural diagenetic change.

In geology, recementation refers to the diagenetic reformation of cement in sedimentary rocks. Mineral-rich fluids can dissolve original cement and later deposit new minerals—such as calcite, quartz, or iron oxides—within pore spaces. This alters porosity, permeability, and mechanical strength and can have significant implications for reservoir quality, groundwater flow, and the preservation of fossils. Petrographic analysis, stable isotope geochemistry, and scanning electron microscopy are typical methods for identifying and characterizing recementation.

In dentistry, recementation denotes the clinical procedure of reattaching a dislodged crown, bridge, inlay, or onlay using dental cement. Reasons for recementation include loss of retention, marginal failure, or temporary removal for endodontic work. The choice between temporary and permanent cements depends on factors such as the need for future removal, remaining tooth structure, and occlusion. Proper isolation, fit verification, and removal of old cement are important for long-term success.

Recementation in industrial or conservation contexts can mean reapplying adhesive or grout to restore structural integrity. Across applications, understanding underlying causes and selecting appropriate materials and techniques are key to durable results.
