Recalltoimia is a neologism used in speculative cognitive science to describe a hypothetical phenomenon in which an individual experiences abrupt, involuntary recall of past personal memories in response to internal or external cues, often accompanied by a brief impulse to act toward a goal. The term combines recall (memory retrieval) with a suffix suggesting a condition or state.

Etymology and scope: recalltoimia is not a widely established clinical term. It has been proposed in discussions that aim to categorize rapid, cue-driven memory experiences that fall short of full flashbacks or seizures. As such, it remains a conceptual label rather than a validated diagnosis.

Presentation: typical descriptions involve sudden recollection of vivid episodic memories triggered by sensory cues such as sounds, smells, or situational contexts. The recall is conscious but involuntary, often accompanied by heightened emotional arousal and a transient motor or goal-directed impulse, such as preparing to act or complete a task. Duration is usually brief, from seconds to a few minutes, with memory for the recall event intact afterward.

Causes and mechanisms: proposed explanations are speculative and not yet established in clinical practice. Hypotheses focus on the interaction of memory networks (such as the hippocampus and adjacent structures) with cue processing and executive control regions.
