Rauleder

Rauleder, German for rough leather, refers to a category of leather with a textured, matte surface produced by abrading or brushing the outer grain. The resulting finish preserves more of the grain than suede or nubuck and is typically stiffer and more durable. Rauleder is commonly used for footwear, belts, and outerwear where a rugged, less-sheen appearance is desirable.

Production and texture: The process involves removing or dulling the natural gloss of the grain surface by sanding, buffing, or abrasion. Variants differ in the depth of abrasion and in how much of the grain remains visible. Some Rauleder achieves a more pronounced rough-out look, while others stay relatively smooth but with a tactile texture. Finishes may include wax, oil, or protective coatings to improve water resistance.

Care and maintenance: The textured surface can be more susceptible to staining and water absorption. Cleaning typically uses a soft brush and a damp cloth, followed by conditioning and a protective spray. Avoid aggressive cleaners or silicone-based products. Reproofing with a leather protector is recommended after cleaning.

Uses and market: Rauleder is used in shoes, boots, jackets, belts, and bags, valued for its casual, rugged character and resistance to showing minor scuffs. It is available in a range of hides and thicknesses, with pricing varying accordingly. It is distinguished from suede and nubuk by retaining more of the grain and a rougher surface.
