This tail is often described as having a fine, almost feathered appearance, giving the breed its name, which translates to "razor claw" or "razor paw" in German.

The Rasiergriff was recognized by the Fédération Internationale Féline (FIFe) in 2005, making it one of the newer cat breeds to gain official recognition. Historically, the breed was once considered a natural variant of the domestic shorthair, but selective breeding efforts in the late 20th century helped establish it as a distinct breed. Cats with the Rasiergriff trait were historically found in various regions of Europe, including Germany, France, and the Netherlands, where they were sometimes kept as companion animals or for their hunting skills.
