RFIDPITtag

RFIDPITtag is a term used to describe a class of transponders that merge passive RFID technology with the PIT tagging approach used for long-term animal identification. Designed for implantation or external attachment, RFIDPITtags provide a unique identifier that can be read by standard RFID equipment and integrated PIT tag infrastructure.

Construction and operation: RFIDPITtags are passive devices with no internal battery; they are housed in a biocompatible capsule such as medical-grade glass, ceramic, or polymer and are similar in size to conventional PIT tags. When within the magnetic field of a reader, the tag is powered and transmits its ID. Most variants operate at LF or HF frequencies (commonly 125 kHz or 134.2 kHz for PIT-like systems), though some configurations may use other bands. The stored data is typically a unique identifier; no personal data is stored on the tag by default, and data linkage to centralized databases is performed by external systems.

Applications and interoperability: RFIDPITtags are widely used in wildlife research to re-identify individuals in mark-recapture studies, and they can also find roles in zoos, farms, or household animal management. They are designed to be cross-compatible with existing PIT-tag readers and inventory systems. Interoperability is often supported by adherence to animal-identification standards such as ISO 11784/11785 or EM4100-type coding, enabling integration with data management platforms and tracking software.

Advantages and limitations: The main benefits include long-term durability and no battery requirement, along with compact size and resilience to harsh environments. Limitations comprise a relatively short read range, the need for specialized readers, potential tag migration or loss, and the requirement for trained personnel for implantation, as well as ethical and regulatory considerations.
