RCostsillaatorid, commonly known as RC oscillators, are a type of electronic oscillator that uses a resistor-capacitor (RC) network to produce an oscillating signal. Unlike LC oscillators which utilize inductors and capacitors, RC oscillators rely solely on resistors and capacitors for their frequency determining components. This makes them generally simpler and more cost-effective to build, especially for lower frequencies.

The fundamental principle behind an RC oscillator is the time delay created by the charging and discharging of capacitors through resistors. This delay is used to create a feedback loop that sustains oscillations. Common types of RC oscillators include the phase-shift oscillator and the Wien bridge oscillator. The phase-shift oscillator uses multiple RC stages to create a specific phase shift needed for positive feedback. The Wien bridge oscillator, on the other hand, employs a bridge circuit configuration to achieve oscillation at a specific frequency with minimal distortion.

RC oscillators are widely used in various electronic applications where a stable and low-frequency signal is required. They are often found in audio generators, function generators, and clock circuits. Their lack of inductors makes them suitable for integration into integrated circuits (ICs) and for applications where magnetic interference from inductors is undesirable. The frequency of oscillation in an RC oscillator is determined by the values of the resistors and capacitors in the RC network. Changing these component values allows for tuning the output frequency.
