Wien

Wien, in English Vienna, is the capital and largest city of Austria. It lies in the eastern part of the country on the Danube River, at the edge of the Wienerwald (Vienna Woods). The city proper has about 1.9 million residents, while the metropolitan area hosts several million more, making it one of the most populous urban regions in Central Europe.

Wien has a long imperial history. It became a seat of the Babenberg and later the Habsburg dynasties and served as the capital of the Holy Roman Empire, the Austrian Empire, and the Austro-Hungarian Empire until 1918. Since the founding of the Austrian Republic, Vienna has been the national capital and a major international hub for diplomacy and culture.

Vienna is renowned for its cultural heritage and music traditions. It is associated with composers such as Mozart, Beethoven, Haydn, Schubert, and Brahms, and is home to renowned institutions including the Vienna State Opera, Musikverein, and the Konzerthaus. Landmarks include St. Stephen's Cathedral, the Hofburg palace complex, Schönbrunn Palace, and the Belvedere. The historic centre and the Ringstrasse-lined ensembles form a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the coffeehouse culture is listed by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage.

Economically, Vienna has a diversified service-based economy and hosts several international organizations, including the United Nations Office at Vienna and IAEA facilities. The city is a major center for research and higher education, with the University of Vienna (founded 1365) and numerous colleges. It features an extensive public transport network (U-Bahn, trams, buses) and an international airport.
