Musikverein

Musikverein is a concert hall in Vienna, Austria, and the home of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. It was built for the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde zu Wien (Society of Friends of Music in Vienna) and is widely regarded as one of the world’s leading concert venues.

The building stands at Musikvereinplatz in the Innere Stadt district. It was designed by Theophil von Hansen in a Historicist style and was completed and opened in 1870.

Its interior contains two principal concert spaces: the Great Hall (Grosser Saal) and the Golden Hall (Goldener Saal). The Great Hall is noted for its large, horseshoe-shaped arrangement and superb acoustics; the Golden Hall is famed for its gilded decoration and its use for chamber concerts.

Acoustics at the Musikverein are considered among the finest in the world. The venue hosts the Vienna Philharmonic’s own concerts as well as performances by international orchestras and soloists. The annual New Year’s Concert, performed by the Vienna Philharmonic, is broadcast worldwide from the Great Hall.
