Vienna

Vienna is the capital and largest city of Austria, located in the northeast of the country on the Danube. The city covers about 414 square kilometers and has roughly 1.9 million residents.

Historically, Vienna was the seat of the Habsburg dynasty and the imperial capital for centuries. It remained the capital through the Austro-Hungarian era, endured annexation by Nazi Germany in 1938, and, after World War II, became the capital of the Republic of Austria. In 1955 Austria declared neutrality, and Vienna continued to develop as a cultural and political center.

Vienna lies on the Danube in eastern Austria, with the Vienna Woods to the west. It has a temperate continental climate with warm summers and cold winters. Annual precipitation is evenly distributed throughout the year.

Economy and international role: Vienna is a major service center with strengths in finance, information technology, and culture. It hosts several international organizations, including the United Nations offices and the OSCE, and remains a popular destination for conventions and tourism.

Culture and landmarks: The Historic Centre of Vienna is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Notable sites include Schönbrunn Palace, Hofburg, St. Stephen's Cathedral, Belvedere, and the MuseumsQuartier. The city has a renowned classical music heritage and a long-standing coffeehouse culture.

Education and transport: The city is home to the University of Vienna and several technical and arts universities. Vienna has an extensive public transport network, including the U-Bahn, trams, and buses, and Vienna International Airport serves the region.
