Brahms

Johannes Brahms (7 May 1833 – 3 April 1897) was a German composer and pianist of the Romantic era. He is widely regarded as one of the leading musicians of the 19th century, noted for his symphonies, concertos, chamber music, and choral works.

He was born in Hamburg into a family of musicians. Early in his career he gained renown as a pianist, eventually moving to Vienna, where he spent much of his adult life. In the 1850s he formed a close artistic relationship with Robert and Clara Schumann; after Schumann's illness and death, Brahms established himself in Vienna as a major composer.

His best-known works include four symphonies (No. 1 in C minor, No. 2 in D major, No. 3 in F major, No. 4 in E minor), the Violin Concerto in D major, and two piano concertos. His chamber music includes several string quartets and string sextets; his choral work Ein Deutsches Requiem (A German Requiem, 1868–69) is among his most significant vocal pieces. He also wrote Variations on a Theme by Haydn (Op. 56) and the Academic Festival Overture, among other works.

Musically, Brahms combined classical forms with Romantic expression, emphasizing craftsmanship, absolute music, and psychological depth. His music often features sturdy forms, lyrical themes, and intricate counterpoint. He influenced later generations of composers and remains central to the standard concert repertoire.

He died in Vienna in 1897.
