Põimitust

Põimitust, also known as "põimimine" or "weaving," is a traditional Estonian craft that involves creating fabric by interlacing threads or yarns. This process has been a significant part of Estonian culture and economy for centuries, with roots tracing back to the medieval period. The term "põimitust" is derived from the Estonian word "põim", which means "to weave."

The traditional method of põimitust involves using a loom, typically a hand loom, to interlace warp threads (the vertical threads) with weft threads (the horizontal threads). The warp threads are first stretched taut and secured, while the weft threads are woven back and forth across the warp, creating a fabric pattern. This method allows for the creation of various textures and designs, depending on the type of yarn used and the weaving technique employed.

Today, it is still practiced by some, particularly in rural areas, and is often used to create traditional Estonian clothing, such as the "põlvik" (a traditional skirt) and the "kand" (a traditional blouse).
