The term covers both professional practitioners and hobbyists who care for plant health, soil quality, water use, and landscape features. Common tasks include planning and planting beds, pruning trees and shrubs, mowing lawns, mulching, fertilizing, weed control, and managing irrigation systems. In practice, puutarhurit may work as horticulturalists, landscapers, park staff, or nursery assistants, depending on specialization. They operate in private gardens as well as public spaces such as city parks and schools.

Education and training vary. Many pursue formal studies in horticulture, landscape design, or agronomy and may take apprenticeships or obtain certifications.
