They typically offer adjustable length settings, guard attachments, and replaceable blades made from stainless steel or coated alloys. Gardening trimmers include string trimmers (weed eaters) and blade trimmers; string trimmers use a continuously fed nylon line, while blade trimmers rely on metal blades for thicker vegetation and edging tasks. Power sources vary from corded electric to cordless lithium-ion batteries, with runtimes and charging times governing practical use.

Design and operation differ by category. Grooming trimmers use blade action to nip hair at a set height, while string trimmers rely on rapid line rotation to shear vegetation. Maintenance involves cleaning, blade sharpening or replacement, oiling where specified, and periodically refeeding or replacing trimmer lines. Battery models require proper charging cycles and eventual replacement.

Safety and guidelines are important. Use guards and cutting attachments suitable for the task, unplug or remove batteries during maintenance, and wear eye protection when trimming near the face or outdoors. For lawn tasks, keep bystanders at a safe distance and work on stable ground to reduce kickback or uneven cuts.

When selecting a trimmer, consider intended use, length settings or cutting width, weight and ergonomics, power source and runtime, and availability of replacement parts and accessories.
