Pudelhund

Pudelhund is the German term for the poodle, a highly intelligent and versatile dog breed known for its curly, dense coat and athletic build. The name Pudelhund is mostly historical; in contemporary German the breed is usually called Pudel, and Pudelhund appears in older literature or as a descriptive term.

Origin and history: The poodle originated as a water work dog in Europe, with development in Germany and France. It was prized for swimming ability and versatility, and the breed spread across Europe from the 16th to 18th centuries. Modern varieties—standard, miniature, and toy—emerged through selective breeding to emphasize size differences while maintaining the same general conformation and coat.

Description and varieties: Poodles have a square, athletic silhouette and a curly, low-shedding coat. They come in three size categories: standard, miniature, and toy. Coat colors cover a wide range, including black, white, apricot, gray, and more. Grooming demands are high: regular brushing and periodic trimming are common. They are often described as suitable for households with allergy concerns due to reduced shedding, though no dog is truly hypoallergenic.

Temperament and care: Poodles are known for high intelligence, trainability, and generally even temperaments. They typically bond closely with families and thrive in active households. Regular mental and physical exercise, obedience training, and socialization are important. Coat care is a regular responsibility, involving brushing and professional grooming every few months.

Health: Poodles are generally long-lived, with a typical lifespan of 12–15 years. They are prone to hereditary conditions such as hip dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy, cataracts, epilepsy, and von Willebrand disease. Regular veterinary care and responsible breeding help manage these risks.
