Progressivists

Progressivists are adherents of progressivism, a broad political and social reform tradition that seeks to use government action to address social inequality, corruption, and inefficiency, while promoting human welfare and civic rights. They typically emphasize rules-based governance, transparency, accountability, and the use of evidence and expert advice to solve public problems. While not a single cohesive party program, progressivists generally advocate reform of political and economic systems to reduce concentrated power and to expand public protections for workers, consumers, and marginalized groups.

Historically, the term is closely associated with the Progressive Era in the United States (roughly from the 1890s to the 1920s), a period of widespread reform aimed at curbing corporate influence, promoting antitrust enforcement, expanding public education, and advancing labor and public health protections. Over time, progressivism has evolved and diversified, with adherents appearing across the political spectrum in various countries. In contemporary discourse, progressivists are often aligned with center-left or liberal movements that prioritize social equity, environmental stewardship, and inclusive governance, while also emphasizing modern regulatory frameworks and social safety nets.

Core principles commonly attributed to progressivists include anti-corruption measures, regulatory reform, social welfare programs, civil rights protection, progressive taxation, investment in public goods, and an emphasis on science, data, and professional administration in policy making. Critics argue that progressivism can justify expansive state power or technocratic governance at the expense of individual liberties or market incentives. Supporters counter that targeted reforms are necessary to remedy entrenched inequalities and to improve democratic legitimacy.
