Prestandaumätningar refer to the systematic collection and analysis of data describing how a system performs. The goal is to quantify speed, capacity, reliability, and resource use under controlled conditions so that comparisons, optimizations, and capacity planning can be carried out with evidence-based justification.

Common metrics include response time (latency), throughput (requests per unit time), CPU and memory usage, disk and network I/O, and energy efficiency. More user-focused indicators such as availability, error rate, and perceived performance may also be measured. The choice of metrics depends on the system and its requirements.

Measurement approaches include benchmarking, load testing, and profiling. Benchmarks use predefined workloads to compare configurations; load tests apply realistic or high-intensity use to observe behavior; profiling identifies where resources are spent. Data can be collected with specialized tools or instrumentation within the system.

Experiment design emphasizes reproducibility and realism. Define objectives, workload models, and acceptance criteria; isolate test effects from background noise; allow warm-up, run multiple iterations, and apply statistical analysis. Normalize results to comparable scales and report uncertainty.

Results support decision making in optimization, capacity planning, and adherence to service-level agreements. They enable benchmarking against baselines and tracking performance improvements over time. Clear documentation of methodology and environment is essential for interpretation and auditability.

Challenges include variability due to hardware, virtualization, caching, and background processes; measurement overhead can skew results; and translating micro-benchmark findings to real-world performance may be non-trivial. Following standardized practices and transparent reporting helps mitigate these issues.
