Pressfitting

Pressfitting is a method of joining pipe using pre-fabricated fittings that are mechanically deformed by a press tool to form a watertight connection. In a typical copper, stainless steel, PEX, CPVC, or multilayer pipe system, a gasket or ferrule inside the fitting is compressed as the tool’s jaws crimp the joint, creating a seal without soldering, welding, or gluing. The joint is designed to be leak-tight once the correct jaws and press cycle are applied and verified.

The technique is widely used in residential and commercial plumbing, radiant heating, and other piping installations where a flame-free, fast assembly is advantageous. Common materials include copper alloys, stainless steels, and polymer-based fittings for use with various pipe types. Fittings are selected to match the pipe material and diameter, and many systems are certified for potable water and other applications according to regional codes and manufacturer specifications.

Installation generally involves cutting the pipe square, deburring the end, inserting the pipe to the proper depth, selecting the appropriate press jaw for the diameter, and operating the press tool until the joint is fully crimped. Visual or mechanical indicators confirm a completed press cycle. Once pressed, joints are typically not reusable, and leaks are avoided only when the system is properly designed, aligned, and pressure-tested.

Advantages include speed, cleanliness, and the absence of open flames or flux, making it suitable for confined spaces. Limitations involve the need for specialized tooling, training, and compatible materials; joints should be tested and overseen by qualified installers to meet local building codes.
