Preshrinks

Preshrinks, also known as preshrunk cotton or preshrunk fabric, refers to textiles that have undergone a pre-laundering process before being cut and sewn into garments or other finished products. This process aims to minimize shrinkage that would otherwise occur during the consumer's initial washing and drying cycles. By exposing the fabric to controlled heat and moisture, manufacturers cause the fibers to expand and then contract to their stable state. This makes the final garment less likely to change size or shape after it is purchased and laundered.

The preshrinking process is typically carried out using industrial washing machines and dryers. Fabrics are often tumbled in hot water and then subjected to heat in dryers, mimicking the effects of domestic laundering but on a much larger scale and with more precise control over conditions. This ensures a more uniform and predictable outcome for the fabric's dimensions.

Garments labeled as preshrunk offer a significant advantage to consumers, as they provide a more consistent fit over time. While the preshrinking process greatly reduces shrinkage, it does not eliminate it entirely. Some minimal shrinkage may still occur, especially if the garment is washed or dried at excessively high temperatures. Therefore, following the care instructions on the garment's label remains important for maintaining its size and shape. The term "preshrunk" is commonly found on labels of cotton t-shirts, denim, and other cotton-based apparel.
