Prefinish

Prefinish refers to the process of applying a finish to a material before it is installed or assembled. This is commonly seen in woodworking, particularly with flooring and cabinetry. Instead of applying stain, sealant, or paint after the product is in place, it is done in a controlled factory environment. This allows for consistent application, thorough drying, and often more durable results due to specialized equipment and techniques.

For hardwood flooring, prefinished planks come with the stain and protective topcoats already applied. This eliminates the need for sanding and finishing a floor on-site, which can be a lengthy and disruptive process. It also means less dust and odor in the home during installation. The finish is typically a series of UV-cured urethane or polyacrylic layers, designed for high durability.

Similarly, prefinished cabinets are manufactured with their finishes completed before they reach the customer or contractor. This includes staining, sealing, and sometimes multiple coats of lacquer or paint. Prefinishing cabinet doors and drawer fronts ensures an even coat, especially in hard-to-reach areas. This method simplifies the installation process for both flooring and cabinetry, reducing labor time and potential errors that can occur with on-site finishing. It also allows for a wider range of finish options and colors to be readily available.
