Powerknop

Powerknop is the Dutch term for the primary user control that toggles the main power state of an electronic device. It is typically a button on the device’s exterior, often bearing a universal power symbol, and may be a physical push-button or a software-triggered control in some systems.

Most powerknoppen fall into two broad types: mechanical and soft. Mechanical powerknoppen are physical buttons that either momentarily contact to enable power or latch to maintain the on state. Soft powerknoppen appear in software; when pressed, the operating system initiates a power sequence such as waking from sleep, shutting down, or entering a low-power state.

Operation commonly involves a brief press to power the device on or wake it, and a subsequent press to turn it off or place it in a power-saving state. In many devices, holding the button for several seconds forces power-down or triggers a reset, a feature intended to prevent accidental shutdowns.

Design and placement considerations include accessibility, tactile feedback, and durability. They are usually located on the front panel of desktops, on laptops’ lid area or keyboard region, or integrated into displays and appliances. Visual indicators (such as LEDs) and an appropriate actuation force improve usability and reliability. In some systems, the power state is managed by firmware or the operating system, with the physical button acting as a low-level trigger.

Etymology and scope: The term powerknop is common in Dutch-language manuals and documentation. The equivalent terms in English are power button or power switch. While widely used for computers, home electronics and appliances also employ powerknoppen with similar functions.
