Power-assisted describes systems in which a user’s manual input is augmented by an external power source, such as electricity, hydraulic pressure, or compressed air. The aim is to reduce effort, increase precision, or enable capabilities beyond what could be achieved by human effort alone. The term is used across transportation, machinery, and assistive devices.

In motor vehicles, power-assisted steering reduces the torque required to turn the steering wheel, particularly at low speeds. Modern cars usually employ electric power steering (EPS) or hydraulic assist. EPS uses an electric motor controlled by a computer to apply steering torque, offering lighter steering, improved fuel efficiency, and the ability to adapt assist to driving conditions and vehicle speed.

Power-assisted bicycles, commonly referred to as e-bikes, provide motorized support to a rider’s pedaling. Assistance may be pedal-activated (pedelec) or, in some designs, on-demand. Regulatory approaches vary: many jurisdictions cap continuous motor power around 250 watts and limit assisted speed to 25 km/h in the European Union, while other regions permit higher power or different speed thresholds. E-bikes are popular for commuting and recreation, expanding accessibility while requiring attention to charging, weight, and safety.

Other examples of power-assisted systems include wheelchairs with motor-assisted propulsion and various power-assisted tools and machinery that reduce manual force or provide additional torque. In all cases, the technology is designed to augment human capability while maintaining user control.

Regulation and safety considerations often govern power-assisted devices, addressing electrical safety, battery performance, braking and control reliability, and the need for user training and maintenance.
