Context and types vary across settings. Portfoliomanagers can be found in mutual funds, pension plans, sovereign wealth funds, hedge funds, private wealth management, and endowments. Different settings have varying investment mandates, liquidity constraints, and fee structures. They may manage equity, fixed income, alternatives, or multi-asset portfolios, and may work as part of an investment team or independently.

Process and tools used by portfoliomanagers typically involve developing investment policy statements, defining benchmarks, performing quantitative and qualitative analysis, using models for asset allocation, and assessing risk through metrics such as volatility, drawdown, and beta, including stress testing. They rely on research, pricing, and macroeconomic analysis, while maintaining compliance and risk controls.

Qualifications and skills commonly include finance, economics, or mathematics degrees, professional designations such as the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), and often MBAs. Successful portfoliomanagers exhibit strong analytical ability, communication and client-relations skills, and the ability to work under pressure, with solid knowledge of financial markets, instruments, and valuation.
