Polyesterijärjestelmät, often referred to as polyester systems, encompass a range of materials and applications centered around polyester resins. These systems are widely utilized in various industries due to polyester's favorable properties, including good mechanical strength, chemical resistance, and cost-effectiveness.

The core of these systems is typically an unsaturated polyester resin, which is a thermosetting polymer. When mixed with a catalyst and an accelerator, the resin undergoes a curing process, transforming from a liquid to a solid, rigid material. This curing process is exothermic, meaning it releases heat. Reinforcing materials, most commonly fiberglass, are often incorporated to enhance the structural integrity and strength of the final product. This combination of polyester resin and fiberglass is known as fiberglass-reinforced plastic (FRP) or simply fiberglass.

Applications for polyester systems are diverse. They are extensively used in the manufacturing of boat hulls, automotive parts, building materials such as panels and pipes, tanks, and decorative items. The versatility of polyester resins allows for molding into complex shapes, making them suitable for intricate designs. Furthermore, polyester systems can be formulated with various additives to achieve specific properties like UV resistance, flame retardancy, or improved surface finish.
