Plattenbau, a compound of German words for "panel construction," refers to a method of building residential housing from prefabricated concrete panels. In Plattenbau projects, wall, floor, and ceiling elements are manufactured in factories and then transported to construction sites, where they are assembled to form a building’s structure and interior partitions. Exterior façades are often clad with additional panels or prefabricated elements. The approach enabled rapid production and standardized layouts, with mid- to high-rise blocks typically reaching four to twelve storeys and organized into large housing estates.
