Retrofit refers to the process of modifying existing systems or structures to improve their performance or extend their useful life, without full replacement. In building and architecture, retrofit projects aim to enhance energy efficiency, resilience, safety, accessibility, and indoor environmental quality. Common measures include insulation upgrades, high-performance windows, efficient heating and cooling systems, heat pumps, building automation, and upgraded electrical and plumbing infrastructure. Seismic retrofits and flood mitigation are other examples.

In transportation and industry, retrofits modify engines or processes to reduce emissions, meet regulatory standards, or enable new fuels or technologies. Examples include exhaust after-treatment in vehicles, diesel retrofit programs, electrification of fleets, and process upgrades in manufacturing. In IT and electronics, retrofits might involve upgrading firmware, adding modular components, or integrating legacy equipment with modern interfaces.
