The Plan-Do-Study-Act cycle, often abbreviated as PDSA, is an iterative four-step management method used in business for the control and continuous improvement of processes and products. It is a fundamental tool in quality improvement and is often associated with the work of W. Edwards Deming. The PDSA cycle is also known as the Deming cycle or the Shewhart cycle.

The first step, Plan, involves identifying a problem or an opportunity for improvement, developing a hypothesis about the cause, and planning a change or test to implement. This includes defining the objective, identifying potential solutions, and outlining the steps for implementation and data collection.

The second step, Do, involves carrying out the planned change or test on a small scale. This is where the intervention is implemented, and data is collected to measure its effect. It is important to document any problems encountered and observe any changes that occur.

The third step, Study, is where the results of the test are analyzed. This involves comparing the data collected during the Do phase with the objectives set in the Plan phase. The team should evaluate whether the change had the desired effect and identify any unexpected outcomes.

The final step, Act, is to act on the findings from the Study phase. If the change was successful, it can be implemented more broadly. If it was not successful, the cycle can be repeated with a modified plan, or a different approach can be taken. This step emphasizes making the change permanent if it proved effective or learning from the failure and returning to the Plan phase. The PDSA cycle is a continuous loop, meaning that after the Act step, the process begins again with a new Plan.
