Pimeäverkko, often translated as the "dark web," refers to a segment of the World Wide Web that requires specific software, configurations, or authorization to access. It is intentionally hidden and not indexed by standard search engines like Google or Bing. This deliberate obscurity is achieved through various technologies, most notably anonymizing networks like Tor (The Onion Router). Tor routes internet traffic through a free, worldwide, volunteer overlay network consisting of more than seven thousand relays to conceal a user's location and usage from anyone conducting network surveillance or traffic analysis.

The pimeäverkko is distinct from the deep web, which encompasses all parts of the internet not indexed by search engines, such as online banking portals, email accounts, and private databases.
