The primary purpose is to convey how a circuit functions, supporting design, analysis, testing, troubleshooting, and clear communication among engineers.

A typical piirikaavio includes passive components such as resistors, capacitors, and inductors; active devices like diodes and transistors; sources of voltage or current; connectors and sometimes integrated circuits. Wires are shown as lines, with junctions indicating connected nodes. Labels provide reference designators (for example, R1, C2, Q1) and component values or operating parameters. Polarized components may indicate polarity, and power rails or ground points are often marked to establish a reference potential. The diagram emphasizes logical or functional relationships rather than physical arrangement.

Piirikaaviot are distinct from wiring diagrams, which illustrate the actual physical layout and cabling. They are frequently complemented by block diagrams that show higher-level system functions.
