Pietsosähköinen refers to the piezoelectric effect, a phenomenon observed in certain crystalline materials. When these materials are subjected to mechanical stress, they generate an electrical charge. Conversely, when an electric field is applied to a piezoelectric material, it deforms mechanically. This reciprocal relationship makes piezoelectric materials useful in a variety of applications.

The effect is primarily observed in materials with an asymmetric crystal lattice structure. When the crystal is compressed or stretched, the positive and negative charges within the unit cells are displaced relative to each other, creating a net electric dipole moment and thus an external electric field. The magnitude of the generated charge is proportional to the applied stress, and the direction of the charge depends on the direction of the stress relative to the crystal axes.

Conversely, applying an electric field across a piezoelectric material causes the crystal lattice to distort. This is because the electric field interacts with the charges within the material, leading to a mechanical strain. The extent of the deformation is proportional to the applied electric field.

Piezoelectric materials are employed in a wide range of technologies. They are commonly found in sensors, such as pressure sensors and accelerometers, where they convert physical forces into electrical signals. They are also used in actuators, such as in inkjet printers and ultrasonic transducers, where they convert electrical signals into precise movements. Other applications include igniters for lighters and gas stoves, resonators in electronic circuits for frequency control, and in certain types of microphones and speakers. Quartz is a well-known natural piezoelectric crystal, while many synthetic ceramic materials like lead zirconate titanate (PZT) are widely used due to their strong piezoelectric properties.
