A lighter is a portable device designed to produce a flame for lighting tobacco products, candles, gas stoves, campfires, and other combustible materials. Most modern lighters store a small amount of fuel and include a mechanism to release fuel and ignite it at the flame port. They are widely used in households, outdoor activities, and industry.

Common types include disposable lighters, which are intended for single use; refillable butane lighters, which can be replenished with fuel and are typically more durable; jet or torch lighters that emit a concentrated high-temperature flame for wind resistance and heavier tasks; and windproof or electric lighters that rely on electricity to create a spark or plasma arc.

Ignition mechanisms vary. Traditional lighters use a flint wheel or a spring-loaded striker to create a spark that ignites released gas. Some models employ piezoelectric ignition, which generates a spark electronically. Electric or plasma lighters use a battery to heat a wire coil or to form a plasma arc, often rechargeable via USB.

Safety and regulation: Many countries require child-resistant features and specific labeling to reduce the risk of accidental ignition. Lighters should be kept away from children, heat, and flammable materials. Usage guidelines typically advise proper storage, refilling (if applicable) in a safe environment, and disposal when empty or damaged.

Environmental and maintenance considerations: Disposable lighters contribute to plastic and metal waste. Refillable lighters and those designed for long-term durability mitigate waste, though they require periodic refilling or charging. Fuel leaks, clogged nozzles, and malfunctioning ignition components are common reasons for failure and may necessitate replacement.
