Common approaches include polyurethane or film laminates and membranes such as PTFE, often used in combination with a breathable fabric to manage moisture vapor. The level of breathability is balanced against wind resistance to avoid condensation and overheating. In construction and architecture, windproofing is part of the building envelope and refers to minimizing wind-driven air leakage. This is achieved with continuous weather barriers, air barriers, properly sealed joints, and high-performance windows and doors. Detailing around penetrations, flashing, and siding is important to maintain the integrity of the wind barrier. Effective windproofing improves thermal performance and indoor comfort, while a separate moisture management strategy handles condensation and humidity.

In outdoor equipment, windproofing is common in jackets, tents, and accessories, where the aim is to reduce heat loss and wind chill while maintaining some level of breathability to allow moisture to escape from the interior. Materials and constructions vary by application, cost, and climate.
