Childresistant, often written as child-resistant or child-resistant packaging, refers to packaging or closures designed to be significantly difficult for children under a certain age to open, while remaining accessible to adults. The term is most commonly used in the context of medications, household chemicals, pesticides, and other potentially hazardous substances.

Design approaches include multi-step mechanisms such as squeeze-and-turn caps, push-and-turn caps, combination locks, and blister packaging, as well as tamper-evident features. The goal is to reduce accidental ingestions by young children while preserving reasonable access for adults.

Regulatory frameworks: In the United States, the Poison Prevention Packaging Act of 1970 and related CPSC rules require child-resistant packaging for many household substances, including most prescription medications and a broad range of over-the-counter products. Exemptions exist, and adults may request non-child-resistant packaging in some cases.

Limitations: Child-resistant does not imply childproof. Determined or older children may still open some packages, and the needs of elderly or disabled users must be considered in design. Ongoing research and standards aim to improve both safety and usability.
