Ingestions refers to the act of taking substances into the body or system, typically through the mouth; the term is used across biology and information technology. In medicine and toxicology, ingestion is a common route of exposure to nutrients and harmful substances.

In biology, ingestion is the process of bringing food or other substances into the digestive system. In animals, this begins with voluntary intake and mastication, followed by swallowing. In single-celled organisms, ingestion occurs via endocytosis or phagocytosis, where particles are engulfed by the cell membrane.

In digestion, ingestion is the initial step preceding chemical breakdown and absorption. In mammals, saliva, gastric acid, and pancreatic enzymes act on ingested material, with nutrients absorbed mainly in the small intestine; peristaltic movements transport material along the tract.

In information technology, data ingestion describes the process of collecting and importing data for immediate usage or storage in a data warehouse, data lake, or analytics system. It can be batch or streaming and may involve cleaning, transformation, and deduplication.

Safety and exposure considerations: ingestion is a major exposure route for toxins and pathogens; preventive measures include food safety, proper storage, and public health guidelines, especially for children.
