Phapitreron

Phapitreron is a genus of pigeons in the family Columbidae. The genus contains three species, all of which are endemic to the Philippines. These species are commonly known as wattled brown doves.

The three species within the genus Phapitreron are: the Luzon bleeding-heart (Phapitreron amethystinus), the Sulu bleeding-heart (Phapitreron suluensis), and the Mindanao bleeding-heart (Phapitreron cinereiceps). Despite their common name, the "bleeding-heart" characteristic is most prominent in Phapitreron amethystinus, where a distinct patch of crimson feathers on its breast resembles a bloody wound. The other two species exhibit less pronounced coloration.

These doves are generally found in forests and woodlands, preferring dense cover. Their diet consists primarily of seeds, fruits, and insects. They are relatively shy and often difficult to observe. Breeding behavior and nesting habits are not extensively documented for all species, but they are believed to build simple nests of twigs and plant material, typically in trees.

The conservation status of the Phapitreron species varies. The Luzon bleeding-heart is listed as Least Concern by the IUCN, while the Sulu bleeding-heart is critically endangered due to habitat loss and fragmentation on the Sulu Archipelago. The Mindanao bleeding-heart is also considered vulnerable. Threats to these species include deforestation, hunting, and the pet trade.
