Peritoneaalidialyysiin

Peritoneaalidialyysiin, also known as peritoneal dialysis, is a type of dialysis used to treat patients with kidney failure. It involves the use of a catheter inserted into the peritoneal cavity, the space within the abdomen that contains the stomach, intestines, and other organs. Dialysis solution is then infused into the peritoneal cavity, where it diffuses across the peritoneal membrane to remove waste products and excess fluid from the bloodstream. The solution is then drained back out of the body.

Peritoneal dialysis is typically performed at home, with patients using a portable dialysis machine to infuse and drain the dialysis solution. This allows patients to maintain a more normal lifestyle compared to those who require hemodialysis, which is performed in a dialysis center. Peritoneal dialysis is often used as a bridge to kidney transplantation, as it can be more easily reversed than hemodialysis.

There are two main types of peritoneal dialysis: continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) and automated peritoneal dialysis (APD). CAPD involves manually infusing and draining the dialysis solution, while APD uses a machine to automate the process.
