Periodizációs refers to the process of dividing training into distinct phases or cycles. This structured approach to athletic preparation aims to optimize performance by systematically varying training stress, volume, and intensity over time. The fundamental principle behind periodizációs is that the human body adapts to training stimuli, and continuous high-intensity training can lead to overtraining and plateaus. By strategically changing the training focus, athletes can avoid these pitfalls and achieve peak performance at specific times, such as during competitions.

The typical periodizációs model involves macrocycles, mesocycles, and microcycles. A macrocycle represents a long-term training plan, often spanning an entire year or more, and usually includes several competitive seasons. Mesocycles are shorter training blocks within a macrocycle, typically lasting several weeks to a few months, and focus on specific training objectives like building strength, power, or endurance. Microcycles are the shortest units, usually lasting one week, and detail the daily training sessions.

Within these cycles, training phases commonly include preparation, competition, and transition. The preparation phase is further divided into general and specific preparation, focusing on building a broad fitness base and then developing sport-specific skills and conditioning. The competition phase aims to sharpen performance and maintain peak condition for events. The transition phase, or off-season, allows for recovery and regeneration before the next macrocycle begins. Effective periodizációs requires careful planning, monitoring of athlete response, and adjustments based on individual needs and progress.
